Where is my Best Friend? - Chapter 1
*
Travelling
Dad told me John is travelling.
He said he went far far away.
Dad doesn’t know why.
He also doesn’t know where.
John is just gone.
It’s weird!
Why would John travel without saying anything?
Why would he go without saying goodbye?
“When will he return?”
I asked my father.
I need to know.
To think of something for us to do, for when he comes back.
Maybe John misses me.
I believe he would want to come back soon.
“He will not come back.”
Dad said.
“What do you mean he will not come back?”
I almost screamed.
Why wouldn’t John return?
“He is free now.”
Dad was sad.
He didn’t cry though.
I never saw him cry.
And he told me little:
“He’s not here anymore.
I don’t know where he is.
He could be on a ship!”
WOW!
John without me.
On a ship!
Could you imagine?
But why did he leave his house, his sister, his father... his mother?
Why did he go alone?
Why did his parents let him travel by himself?
John is a kid.
I’ve always been told kids can’t travel alone!
Why does no one go after him?
Is nobody afraid of what could happen to him?
“When time comes to this kind of journey, no one can stay.”
Dad tried to explain.
Then I went to my room and opened my geography book.
Geography is one of John’s favorite subjects in school.
I like English.
He is good at that too, but prefers Biology.
In the book, I saw many flags.
Very different countries.
Some too large.
Others too small.
Italy looks like a boot, and I think that’s funny.
And Cyprus looks like a horn, and that’s funny too!
I tried to remember countries John likes the most.
Then, I found his favorite one: Japan!
Maybe, because it has the first letter of his name.
J… John... Japan...
John once told me that the world will be proud of him.
Because he is going to search for colorful stars.
Become an astronaut!
I smiled.
It’s always fun to see his eyes shining when he talks about dreams.
But… Why so far away?
Why never come back?
Why did he leave?
Without saying goodbye?
I need my best friend.
I didn’t want him to travel.
I don’t want him away.
